C.S.E.A. Local 614 and the NYS Partnership Program in conjunction with Stony Brook University Management held its First Annual Employee Recognition Dinner in honor of C.S.E.A. employees who have 25 years or more of State Service on June 22, 2009 in the Student Activities Center. Members were given awards which were handed out by local President Carlos Speight, Region One President Nick LaMorte. With the help of our Award Recognition committee, (Joseph Longo as Committee Chair, members Maryann Phelps and Jeffrey Quinichette), the gathering was successful considering such a short period of time they had to put it together. Congratulations to all for your hard work and dedication!
Spring Workshop Hundreds of CSEA activists from across the state attended the union's annual Spring Workshop in Rochester June 12 - 14. The workshop, with the theme "Hearing Every Voice," focused on building union leadership and other skills. Programs included a forum for members 35 years old and younger, a plenary session on the Employee Free Choice Act and an American Red Cross first aid and CPR class. Public Budget Forum Hears From Long Island Region Officers
Nassau County Local 830 President Jerry Laricchiuta, SUNY Stony Brook Local 614 President Carlos Speight, State Employees Local 016 Andre Sigmone and Nassau Educational Local 865 President Monica Berkowitz added considerable credence to the CSEA presence by joining LaMorte at the Suffolk County Legislative Auditorium of the William A. Rogers Building in Hauppauge. The five CSEA officials offered statements to Republican Assembly members from Nassau and Suffolk counties that detailed the numerous ways the Governor's budget proposals would negatively affect their specific localities, state workers as a whole and the general public by consequence. CSEA MEMBERS RALLY AGAINST STATE
CSEA members recently gathered outside the New York State Office Building in Hauppauge to rally against the proposed budget of Governor David Paterson, which includes destructive cuts in state services and the state work force while ignoring cost-cutting options that, can save the state billions. Nearly 300 union officers and activists assembled peacefully to urge the Governor to reassess his plan to layoff nearly 9,000 state workers and consider alternative solutions offere by CSEA to address the state budget crisis. "Our members are already doing more with less and have endured massive cuts to state agencies," said Long Island Region President Nick LaMorte. "It's time our legislative leaders looked elsewhere to balance the budget." Albany Rally, 2009
On Wednesday, January 7, 2009, two buses from CSEA Local 614, Stony brook braved dangerous weather conditions to march down Main Street in Albany with a mission to let the Governor know,” that we are not going to let him balance the State Budget on the back of State employees”. Over one thousand participants showed up for the rally, from various unions across the State of New York. I’m happy to say Local 614 had the most participants from CSEA Region 1 that attended the rally. On behalf of me and the Local Executive Board we thank you for your participation and bringing the voices of your fellow members to Albany. But, I would like to stress how important is it for everyone to know that this fight has just begun. This will be a long fight and we must prevail for the sake of the communities in which we live, facility in which we are employed, and for the sake of our families that we provide for and support. So stand together and make sure the Governors slash and burn budget proposal makes its way to the trash pail where it BELONGS. Remember ONLY WHEN WE STAND STRONG TOGETHER CHANGE OCCURS.

H1N1 (Swine Flu) Update A state Supreme Court judge has issued a temporary restraining order against the H1N1 and seasonal flu mandatory vaccination ordered by the state Health Department for specific groups of health care workers pending an Oct. 30 hearing. The lawsuit filed by PEF, NYSUT and others challenges the way the law was implemented. CSEA has concerns about the mandate and is seeking a more comprehensive approach to infectious disease control but did not participate in this particular lawsuit. More about H1N1, seasonal flu vaccinations
CONGRATULATIONS Christopher Bueno Steven Friedman Michelle Carbone Labor Day Parade 2009 The Long Island region chartered a bus to transport nearly 50 activists into Manhattan to march in the Labor Day Parade with their fellow CSEA members from the metropolitan and southern regions. Operation Shoebox
Shop Steward Meeting CSEA Local 614 held a Shop Steward meeting at Region One Headquarters. President Carlos Speight spoke about the importance of understanding their roles as shop stewards and being representatives for our members. It is important to remain positive and work together as a team. Executive Vice President Debbie Nappi-Gonzalez spoke on how much of our voice is heard through these stewards. The stewards are the eyes and ears of a union, and without you , it would be very difficult to run a local. We thank all of you who have completed your training, and have followed through over and over again by participating and giving a helping hand in all events that have taken place. Keep up the good work!
CSEA Makes Strides CSEA recruited nearly 400 walkers for the 2008 Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach; due in large part to the diligent efforts of the Long Island Region Women's Committee and the commitment of CSEA members in general. The Long Island Region once again participated as a flagship sponsor of the American Cancer ociety's annual event and CSEA was able to raise more than $30,000 to put toward the goal of finding a cure for breast cancer. This is critical because the money raised is used to advance research, promote education, improve patient care and help families cope with the effects of breast cancer. Still, much more still needs to be done. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 178,480 women in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. "While we are happy with what we accomplished this year, there is still more to be done," said Women's Committee Chair Catherine Custance. "Our goal is to further increase CSEA participation next year and contribute further to the ultimate objective; which is the final eradication of this insidious disease." D.E.C. Info Day
CSEA Local 614 Women’s Committee
The Statewide Women’s Conference was held on November 7 – 9, 2008 at the Hyatt Hotel in Hauppauge. There were more than 500 members that attended. The conference was intended to address specific issues that directly target women’s interest, and especially those who are committed to moving forward and being a true activist in the many causes of labor. Most workshops were interactive and attendees were very enthusiastic and passionate in what they believed in. Several sessions were ranked fairly high among the Women’s Committee at the Local to Region level, from the instructor to class participation. Many women found the Self Defense and Emergency Preparedness classes interesting and informative. Health concerns and benefits, legislative process information and domestic violence are just some more of the topics that seemed to intrigue the members that attended the conference. |
